Tesla working on a charger extension cord for other brand EVs

According to InsideEVs, Tesla Inc. is working on a handy extension cable that would enable owners of non-Supercharger-compliant electric cars to plug them in despite the difference in standards. It is reportedly a NACS-standard cable that also supports CCS adapters. At the same time, Elon Musk’s company keeps calling upon the other carmakers to standardize charging port placement on their EVs.

The Tesla Supercharger network had originally been created exclusively for the needs of Tesla cars. Having evolved into one of the world’s largest charging networks, however, it began branching out to support a number of other charger standards. A year ago, Tesla started equipping its chargers in the United States with CCS adapters.

However, as it did so, it discovered that the V3-generation cable it used was a little short for some off-brand EVs. All Tesla vehicles have their charging port located at the rear left wheel. Owners of cars with the port in a completely different spot may find it necessary to maneuver around the charging station, park diagonally or otherwise occupy two charging spots in order to reach one.

With the advent of the Supercharger V4 generation with its longer cables and higher power output, the issue is going to gradually go away. Still, there is only a handful of V4 stations around, while the V3 stations number in the thousands.
