Could James Bond’s amphibious Lotus Esprit have inspired Tesla Cybertruck?

Ever since the Tesla Cybertruck came into the spotlight, it has been spawning memes, mostly related to its unusual appearance. We’ve all seen and heard the comparisons with children’s doodles and trash containers. Now, let’s hear out a conspiracy theory. Hey, it actually adds up!

Seriously, though, Elon Musk did mention the 1977 James Bond movie The Spy Who Loved Me as one of his sources of inspiration for the Cybertruck. In that one, the Agent 007 drove a Lotus Esprit modded for the big screen to look like an edgy, boxy sedan that could turn into a submarine. The real Esprit couldn’t, of course. The ‘Wet Nelly’ from the movie could.

After the filming in Bahamas was complete, the car proceeded to go on display and featured in a series of shows throughout the United States. The filming crew then sent it to a warehouse for storage. It has remained there until 1989, when a couple from Los-Angeles purchased the entire warehouse, complete with its contents, for as little as 100,000 USD. In 2013, it proceeded to auction the Wet Nelly off at RM Sotheby's, where an anonymous client paid 800,000 USD for it. As it later turned out, that buyer was no one else but Elon Musk.
