After several years of promises and delays, Tesla Inc. has finally started assembling its battery-powered Cybertruck pickup at Gigafactory Texas. The company posted a photo of the factory crew gathered around the first vehicle produced, and Elon Musk reposted it with a congratulatory text.
The pic only shows the top half of the truck, which looks no different from the other recently unveiled prototypes.
It is unclear how many units the Gigafactory will churn out. During the Tesla Investor Day this spring, the manufacturer said the assembly lines would start this summer (which proved true after all), but added that full-scale production will not begin until the next year.
In May, Musk said the company would be able to move 250,000–500,000 Cybertruck units worldwide per year if the demand lives up to the expectations. Tesla says it had received around 1.6 million pre-orders before November 2022, but it remains to be seen how many of those will turn into actual orders. The first customers who prepaid their trucks in full will be receiving them in late Q3 2023, i.e., no later than September 30.
