Tesla Cybertruck effortlessly gaps GMC Hummer EV in a drag race

Tesla has handed over the first Cybertrucks to its employees at the end of the last week, but the weird pickup has already gotten itself into a scuffle with one of its most powerful adversaries – the hulking, heavy, performance-packed GMC Hummer EV. No wonder Carwow was eager to compare the two in a standing-start race.

Matt Watson traveled to Tesla’s Gigafactory Texas for the occasion. He picked up a Cybertruck there, and not just any random truck – the three-motored Cyberbeast rated at 857 PS (845 hp / 630 kW) and 930 Nm (686 lb-ft) of torque.

The Hummer EV that went up against it was just as well-equipped with two motors at the rear axle and one at the front. Furthermore, it apparently packed considerably more punch with its stated 1,014 PS (1,000 hp / 746 kW) and 1,485 Nm (1,095 lb-ft).

The very first drag race saw the Tesla truck basically leave the General Motors for dead. Two more standing races and a 50 km/h (31 mph) rolling race were subsequently attempted with the same outcome. The Cyberbeast’s fastest quarter-mile time ended up being 11.2 seconds. The Hummer EV never did better than 12 seconds.

In the end, the drivers agreed that GMC’s truck suffered from its enormous weight dictated both by its sheer bulk and ultra-large battery pack. While the Cybertruck is no lightweight itself at 3,084 kilos (6,800 lbs), its closest rival crushes the ‘passenger car’ scales with 4,110 kilos (9,060 lbs). That’s a lot of dead weight to have to launch (in both cases, admittedly).
