Tesla is getting an upgrade package ready for its Cybertruck EV to let it cross smaller lakes and rivers in amphibious mode, Carscoops reports citing Elon Musk.
According to the company’s eccentric billionaire CEO, the Cybertruck is already buoyant enough to stay afloat in the water – the only challenge is to ensure it stays that way for long enough. To that end, the company reckons it will need to modify the door linings all around and it will be enough for the electric truck to sail roughly 100 meters (328 feet).
Tesla Engineering VP Lars Moravy said earlier that the pickup had a power socket in its cargo bed suitable for connecting a variety of appliances from welding machines to boat engines. The media have interpreted the last bit as a hint at the company’s actual plans moving forward.
It is still unknown when the upgrade may get released. Musk had stated multiple times before that the Cybertruck would be able to go amphibious over smaller water obstacles. The last time he mentioned the feature was last fall, when he claimed it would be able to cross ‘rivers and lakes.’
