Tesla Cybertruck users report rust issues mere months after purchase

Tesla has only begun shipping the Cybertruck in late 2023, but owners on the Internet are already complaining about issues more commonly occurring in well-used cars. The most frequent one concerns the body of the truck erupting in rust specks after just a few days of rain exposure, Carscoops reports.

A user of cybertruckownersclub.com who lives in California reported that his pickup exploded in reddish rust spots after just a few days driving around under pouring rain. The spots were small, but still very noticeable. Since California is known for its mild climate, one can imagine how much worse the issue could get in other states.

It’s worth noting that other forum users chimed in saying they hadn’t noticed anything like that. Some even supposed that it wasn’t rust at all, but rather some kind of pollutant contained in the rain. However, multiple users have shared similar stories in the next few days.

One of them took delivery of his electric pickup on February 1 and noticed that it already had traces of rust on it. He took care to document these and contacted Tesla for an explanation. A company representative responded saying that Tesla had instructed care centers to brush these defects off the Cybertruck during normal maintenance, but hadn’t supplied them with the necessary tools to do so. The letter ended with a promise to contact the owner again in March.

The maintenance manual included with the truck mentions that any traces of grease, oil, bird droppings, tar, dead insects, road reagents and the like must be removed from the body of the truck at once. Leaving them on until a proper carwash is unadvisable.
