Proper tuning makes the Tesla Model 3 faster than the McLaren 570S

Boosting an internal combustion engine is nothing new, but the same trick won’t work with an electric car. So what do you do, then? Unplugged Performance shares its insight.

There are actually numerous ways in which you can enhance the performance of any given car, and one of the most reliable ones is giving it an aerodynamic kit for extra downforce. The U.S.-based tuner endows this Tesla Model 3 with a front spoiler lip that should improve power delivery to the ground.

Suspension is another major point. The Tesla in question gains racing-grade coilovers and individually adjustable suspension arms. Moving on to the brakes, the team replaces the friction pads and enlarges the front wheels, resulting in more responsive deceleration.

Once done with the changes, professional racing driver Joshua Allen took this Model 3 for a lap of Buttonwillow Raceway near Los-Angeles. The lap time of 1:54.6 proved enough to dethrone the McLaren 570S, with the dreaded Porsche 911 (991) GT3 staying just one-tenth of a second ahead.

Unplugged Performance points out that the race took place with the car retaining its factory-stock Track Mode. Tesla has since released a firmware update that improved the Track Mode, among other things, so the result could be even better with it installed.
