Reports: Tesla runs farther with Intel CPUs, newer AMD systems reduce range

Would you expect a Tesla Model 3 with its infotainment and navigation systems running on AMD Ryzen CPUs to get 3.5% less mileage per charge than the same car with older Intel Atom tech? InsideEVs claims this is the actual case.

It seems that the Ryzen architecture reduces the average driving range by 22 kilometers (14 miles) to 602 km (374 miles). Teslascope posted a screenshot it received from an Australian owner of a new Model 3 where Tesla explicitly states the range discrepancy and asks for an order confirmation or canceling.

It does not look like all specifications will be affected. For instance, at least one Tesla Model 3 owner with an AMD processor and chipset said they did not receive any such warnings from the company, nor did the car have any stickers warning about smaller range.

It looks like the Model 3 RWD equipped with 18-inch wheels now has 626 km (389 miles) of WLTP-rated range. The Model 3 Long Range AWD with 19-inch rims has the 602 km mentioned above, and the Model 3 Performance with 20-inch rollers has 547 km (340 miles). This is 11, 12 and 20 kilometers less than with the Intel CPUs (6.8, 7.5 and 12.4 miles less, respectively).

This is the first time AMD tech made it inside the Model S and Model X. Interestingly enough, the Model Y, which Tesla silently switched to AMD simultaneously with the Model 3, actually gained 26-34 km (16.2-21.1 miles) of range depending on the specification. This was likely thanks to other improvements under the hood, which helped compensate for the increased power drain.
