Elon Musk has just announced the comeback of a major bonus for all new Tesla Model S and Model X buyers. All those who per-order their cars now (and those who were lucky to do so on August 3 or later) will take advantage from free lifetime charging at Tesla Supercharger outlets everywhere.
The offer is only valid until the car ownership changes: sell it to someone else, and you both forfeit the privilege. Despite this limitation, experts believe this initiative will bolster the sales of the more expensive Tesla EVs drastically. As it stands right now, the Model S and Model X are unpopular at best, making up less than 20% of the total sales for the company.
This is far from being the first time Musk announces a promotion like this. Before 2017, all Tesla owners had free access to the U.S. marque’s Supercharger network. This was cancelled in 2017, but similar promotions cropped up from time to time.
The big downside to this is that the current Model S / X owners miss out on the offer completely. There is already a squall of negative comments on Musk’s Twitter page, with fans mostly blaming him for 'undermining brand loyalty'.
Using a Supercharger station currently costs 0.28 USD per 1 kilowatt-hour.
