Elon Musk seems hell-bent on putting the name of its Tesla Model S into the record book of the dreaded North Loop. Car spotters have once again spied the battery sedan on the track, this time fitted with a giant rear wing.
The test car seems to be the same blue vehicle we have seen before. Powering it is a new powertrain called Plaid, which reportedly delivers up to 772 hp (576 kW) and 931 Nm (687 lb-ft) of torque to the wheels thanks to three high-end electric motors.
Aside from the powertrain, the ‘Ring-ready Tesla sports a tweaked chassis and enlarged wheel arches. It also wears semi-slick tires instead of the standard ones. The cabin isn’t shown on the photos, but witnesses claim it is stripped of everything minus the driver’s bucket seat and the safety cage.
The presence of the racing-grade rear wing may be considered as evidence that the experimental powertrain of the car proved to be much stronger than the rumored numbers quoted above, which in turn necessitated maximizing the downforce. Then again, maybe Elon Musk feels like introducing his Model S to the professional motorsports world.
