Tesla Model S to extend range to 400 miles (644 km) later this year

The Tesla Model S has received plenty of technical upgrades since its 2012 launch. Now, Elon Musk has promised us to extend its driving range to 400 miles (644 km) in 2020.

The most current implementation of the liftback packs a 100-kWh traction battery and dual motors installed one per axle, resulting in an AWD configuration. Its Long Range and Performance variants add power and range, make the sprint in 3.7 and 2.4 seconds, and start from U.S. $79,990 and $99,990, respectively.

In 2019, Tesla has managed to squeeze 600 kilometers (373 miles) of EPA-rated range from the Model S, or 610 km (379 miles) if you prefer the WLTP rating system.

Aside from the range upgrades, Tesla will likely be introducing the three-engine Plaid powertrain to the market this year. Further improvements to the S family include new seat design, suspension tweaks, a new charging port, and a horizontal infotainment display, like on the newer Model 3 and Y. One last anticipated feature is a new traction battery type, which is still in development.
