Tesla releases its Full Self-Driving software in Beta mode

Elon Musk has confirmed that the software suite called FSD (Full Self-Driving) is underway to select cars, but only for beta testing purposes. He stressed that maximum care will go into implementing the final production version, and that in the meantime, only the most experienced and skilled drivers will be allowed to test.

It remains a bit unclear what components the FSD system consists of. One good candidate is the unit called Navigate on Autopilot, which recognizes traffic signs and lights. Once it gets a large-scale update, it would be able to carry out turns even on the most complex intersections.

As promising as the above may sound, most industry experts agree that no self-driving system available today can justify the driver removing their hands from the steering wheel. Every implementation has its shortcomings, and you had better be prepared for when one suddenly becomes apparent.
