Tesla cars to get PlayStation 5-grade graphics processors

AMD has rolled out the next generation of its graphics processors named the RDNA™ 2. Along with Sony, which uses these in its PlayStation 5 consoles, Tesla will be a major buyer.

The electric car company will be integrating the GPUs into the second-row multimedia and gaming system screens of the updated Model S and Model X. The chips are optimized for mobile devices and laptops and offer excellent graphics quality along with low power consumption. Rumor has it that power efficiency was the main reason why Tesla decided to invest in these chips.

The carmaker unveiled the facelifted Models X and S at the beginning of the year, but deliveries haven’t started yet. The liftback should finally become available in several days, while the crossover SUV should arrive in the fall. In addition to new multimedia systems, both cars now feature landscape-oriented (i.e. horizontal) displays instead of portrait-oriented (vertical).
