A specially prepared Tesla Model S Plaid sedan piloted by Randy Pobst at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Race this weekend has scored a victory in the Exhibition class.
It also came 10th in the overall ranking, which the team called an excellent result for an electric vehicle.
The racing route had to be shortened somewhat this year due to the leftover ice and snow on the mountaintops posing a safety concern. The performance sedan covered the entire distance in 6 minutes 57.22 seconds. The first place in the overall ranking went to a Wolf GB08 TSC-LT, which needed 5 minutes 55.246 seconds for the climb. A Volkswagen I.D.R. Concept managed to climb the complete (longer) Pikes Peak track faster than any production car in 2018, covering 12.42 miles (19.99 km) in 7 minutes 57.148 seconds. The record is still considered unbeaten among EVs and ICE cars alike.
