Lucid Air filmed drifting like Tesla Model S never could

Startup firm Lucid has posted a video from its test grounds where its Air EV, a five-meter long sedan and archrival of the Tesla Model S, sidled along the track as if it were an ICE-powered drift racer.

The manufacturer points out that pre-production units have covered over 860,000 miles (1,380,000 kilometers) during the testing phase, sometimes hitting 270 km/h (175 mph). The Lucid Air in the video accelerates down the track, corners like a racecar, and rides down a graded track loop.

In its top specification, the car packs 1,111 PS (1,096 hp / 817 kW) and can sprint 0-97 km/h (0-60 mph) in 2.5 seconds. First Edition prices in the USA start from $169,000, with shipments set to begin later this month. Lower trim levels will be added later, and will start from $77,400.

The production has taken place in California since late September. In the coming two years, Lucid plans to boost the production volume to 90,000 annual units.

The Lucid Air shapes up to be both more powerful and better off in the battery department than the Tesla Model S, maxing out at 836 kilometers (520 miles) of driving range.
