A total of 40,168 Tesla Model S and Model X cars produced between 2017 and 2021 have become the subject of the latest recall campaign due to power steering issues, Carscoops reports.
We are told that the software update Tesla rolled out on October 11 messed with the power steering presets on some cars, potentially causing a conflict between the car’s own presets and the newly downloaded instructions. As a result, in situations such as when the car suddenly hits a pothole, the new software might incorrectly interpret the event and lower the power drastically – or, worse still, disengage the power steering altogether.
NHTSA believes that this behavior may lead to accidents. For its part, Tesla says it has received no incident reports so far. Regardless of whether or not there has been any trouble for owners, a software update is already being dispensed. Per Tesla, over 97 percent of the affected vehicles had their software successfully fixed by November 1.
