Report: Tesla Model S smashes through another quarter-mile record

The YouTubers over at Tesla Plaid Racing have posted a video filmed on board of a Tesla Model 3 as it ran a 402-meter drag strip in 8.563 seconds.

The report comes from Teslarati referencing the calculations made by DragTimes based on the chronometer data seen in the video. As such, it is still not official. If confirmed, it will make the Tesla Model S the world’s fastest-accelerating production EV after Rimac Nevera. The Croatian hypercar is way more expensive and highly limited in production, so that’s a major achievement.

The same video suggests that the car accelerated 0-60 mph (0-96.6 km/h) in 1.88 seconds and reached 260.7 km/h (162 mph) at the finish line. Earlier record attempts by Tesla Plaid Racing also yielded some impressive quarter-mile times – 8.714 and 8.73 seconds.

The Model S that participated in the run was a mostly-stock Plaid spec armed with 1,020 PS (1,006 hp / 750 kW) of combined motor power. As you can see in the video, it had been stripped almost bare before the race. The chronometer at the end of the run shows 8.59 seconds, but Miguel Roy (the driver) and DragTimes both talk about 8.563 seconds being the record. It is possible that they used multiple different measurement methods.
