Drag Race: Ferrari SF90 vs. Tesla Model X Plaid

YouTuber DragTimes has thrown cars from two entirely different market segments at each other: the sleek and splendid Ferrari SF90 went up against the somewhat offbeat, but immensely capable Tesla Model X Plaid SUV.

In its Plaid specification, the car makes use of three high-end electric engines designed to slam the wheels with 1,020 PS (1,006 hp / 750 kW) at once. The torque is also instant, and a smartly designed all-wheel drive system ensures it gets applied as fully as possible. On the downside, the electric monster rocks the scales at 2,419 kg (5,333 lbs).

The Italian superhybrid also has three electric motors, but they play second fiddle to the main 4.0-liter V8. The resulting output is quite close to that of its rival at 986 PS (972 hp / 725 kW). All four wheels are driven, and at 1,778 kg (3,920 lbs), the Ferrari is featherweight in comparison.

But let us not forget the pricing, right? There is no avoiding the fact that a new Ferrari SF90 will set you back at least $566,000 USD in North America, while the Tesla Model X Plaid can be had for $124,000. This is not to say the two are interchangeable – not for most of us – but the 4.5x price difference is still an important consideration for many.

Despite its lower curb weight, the SF90 barely inched out a victory in the first run and proceeded to lose the second run. It then came back in the third and final race, showing the bulky crossover SUV that aerodynamics was a thing to be reckoned with. Even so, the gap between the two has been remarkably small all along.
