Tesla Model Y shipments expected months ahead of schedule

Tesla may have been sluggish with its Model S, X and 3 launch schedules, but the upcoming Model Y SUV just might break the stereotype by arriving… next month.

When Tesla premiered its battery crossover last spring, it said the first cars would reach their owners in the fall of 2020. Several weeks ago, the company proudly reported that first shipments might be made in summer, and now, multiple unofficial sources claim that we only have to wait until February.

The Model Y Performance will hit the showrooms first, priced at $61,000 in the States and €69,000 in Germany. The more affordable versions will follow later. The RWD Standard version announced earlier will cost $39,000; its shipment term still says ‘Spring 2021’, but perhaps it will also reach the market sooner than expected.

The one downside of this is that an early launch may hurt the sales of the Model 3, which in turn cannibalized the sales of the more expensive Model S and X when it came out.
