EVs peak in popularity in both USA and Europe, study finds

The share of electric vehicles in total new car sales has reached 5.1% in the USA and 12% in Europe over the past ten months of 2022, JATO Dynamics reports citing own findings.

Battery cars made up 2.9% of the market in the country over the same period last year, 1.7% in 2020 and 1.3% in 2019. Experts attribute the popularity boost to outstanding sales of the Tesla Model Y (in the gallery here) and electric pickup trucks from key automakers.

Registration certificates from 23 European states suggest that new cars sold were all-electric 12% of the time, which in numeric terms means around 1,090,000 units out of 9,090,000 total cars sold in January through October. Adding hybrids to the mix raises the share to 1,860,000 units.

Well-developed infrastructure, wide assortment of models and state incentives lowering EV prices to be on par with those of ICE cars are all being cited as the major reasons behind their success in the Old World.
