Tesla Gigafactory Berlin struggles under demand after slashing prices

Automotive News Europe is reporting that the German industrial complex built by Tesla is no longer capable of delivering enough Model Y electric cars to their buyers due to the recent price drop. With more people rushing in to grab a Tesla, orders take longer to process and the company is already considering its expansion options.

According to the German website of Tesla, the shipments of the entry-level Model Y spec are currently postponed until February–March. Before the price fell 17 percent a week ago, buyers had no issue ordering their car and taking delivery of it within the same month. The waiting queue for the Long Range and Performance versions, which were only discounted by 4 and 1 percent respectively, looks shorter, although the website still says ‘January–March’.

According to Jörg Steinbach, the Minister of Economics of the Brandenburg State, Germany, said the company ought to consider an expansion of production. He pointed out that the Gigafactory, which already had around 9,000 employees, tried to increase their number by 200–300 per week, leaving the other businesses in Grünheide Municipality struggling with human resource shortages.

The trade union added that Gigafactory employees were complaining about having to work extra hours and weekends, apparently just so that Tesla could deliver more cars in time.
