Tesla Model Y flaunts street-legal beadlock wheels

Tesla car specialist Unplugged Performance has launched the sales of a special wheel set for the Model Y crossover, which supports both beadlocked tires and regular, street-legal ones.

Traditional beadlock wheel designs are handy in heavy off-road conditions when trying to keep low-pressure tires attached firmly to the wheels in spite of strong lateral loads. Their main disadvantage is that they are not road-worthy in most countries due to certification and standardization difficulties.

In contrast, the UP-03 Beadlock set for the Model Y comes with two sets of mounting points for tires. The outer set can be used with titanium beadlocks and low-pressure tires (from 5 psi), while the inner set can be used with standard, road-legal tires.

The wheels themselves are made from forged aluminum and feature 12 slightly tapering spokes, providing a good balance between weight and durability in extreme conditions.

The full set costs U.S. $4,495. Buyers can choose between satin grey and satin black for the finish.
