Toyota Corolla loses the title of world’s most popular car to an EV

The Tesla Model Y has skyrocketed to the position of the world’s single most purchased vehicle, coming ahead even of the affordable and ubiquitous Toyota Corolla, Focus2move has concluded after analyzing the sales statistics for the past eight months of 2023.

Tesla Inc. has found buyers for 758,645 Model Y units over the specified period, while the Corolla has sold 46,865 fewer units.

The Japanese automaker has thus lost 3.4% Corolla sales year-on-year, while the Model Y sales have risen by 76.7%. The Ford F-Series landed third with 595,675 units sold and a YoY increase of 18.6%.

Elon Musk’s company continues engaging other automakers worldwide in EV price wars. In its latest move against the competition, it has slashed the prices on its Model 3 lineup, bringing it nearly on par with the Corolla. With EV subsidies factored in, owning an battery car becomes even more tempting.
