SUVs and crossovers conquer 50%+ of the EU market for the first time

Sports and crossover utility vehicles have claimed a combined market share of 51% in Europe last year, setting a historical precedent for this car body style. Upon a closer look, it is clear that Tesla EVs spearheaded this change.

The premium SUV market has demonstrated the biggest growth in 2023 with 843,939 units sold in total and a year-on-year increase of 31%. The Tesla Model Y (shown here) has been especially popular with 254,800 units sold and an 85% YoY growth.

On an interesting side note, Europeans have continued to prefer compact cars to full-size ones. It’s just that compact hatchbacks fell out of this market segment to be replaced with the more utilitarian “baby SUVs”. This type of transports was the most demanded in the EU by far in 2023, with over 4.1 million units sold.
