Tesla has started a large-scale recall campaign encompassing a total of 125,227 vehicles made from 2012 until 2024. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the affected examples fail to properly warn the driver and the passengers about loose seat belts.
Specifically, the sensor under the seat may fail to determine correctly when the seat is occupied. As a result, the audiovisual seat belt warning doesn’t go off as it should. The issue concerns some Model S liftbacks made in 2012–2024, Model X SUVs made in 2016–2024, Model 3 sedans assembled in 2017–2023 and Model Y crossovers made between 2020 and 2023.
The company plans on releasing an over-the-air software update to eliminate the dependency of the belt warning system on the faulty seat pressure sensor. Once updated, the cars will simply remind everyone to buckle up as soon as the motors start. No dealership visit will be required.
