Tesla sets off to design a controls-free EV in a few years

According to business Insider, the electric carmaker is actively pursuing Elon Musk’s dream of designing a completely autonomous electric vehicle devoid of the steering wheel, pedals and any other controls. The production start is allegedly penciled in for 2024.

Elon Musk pointed out that such a car would smash through the bottom in terms of ownership costs, becoming the cheapest EV to maintain throughout its life. Its production and launch would also constitute a major growth driver for the company.

No other details have been revealed. The EV, which is expected to get a very futuristic design, may debut as an early concept sometime in 2023.

Earlier this month, Musk opened the Gigafactory Texas, where he plans to start producing the Cybertruck next year. The eccentric CEO had other ambitious releases planned for the same year as well, including the long-anticipated Roadster Mk2, the Semi truck, and a humanoid robot.
