One of Daihatsu’s vehicles for the JMS-2025 was a tiny multi-purpose van called the Kayoibako-K. Based on a same-name prototype unveiled a coupe of years ago, it will soon transform into a whole family of similar, but differently sized delivery vans for Japan. On top of that, the company toys with the idea of making a tiny RV on the same chassis.
Like most Kei cars that it shares many design traits with, the Kayoibako-K sports a rounded body with a deliberately “cute” front end. The interior in the video looks more futuristic than cute with its large steering yoke, big buttons for big fingers and a clean, minimalist aesthetic. There is no dashboard and no infotainment system, but only because you are supposed to use your phone for both.
The cargo space features a sliding side door and a pop-up tailgate for the best possible access to the goods inside. There’s no passenger seat, so the entire space not taken up by the driver is usable. The camper/RV version features an added roof tent, an awning and a picnic furniture set. It also rides on off-road tires and has some additional lights for nighttime illumination. While the delivery van wears a livery depicting various consumables, the RV has something like a topographical map on it.
The company says that the Kayoibako series of microvans has already been approved for production under two different brands – Toyota and Daihatsu. The former will be making the bigger variants, while the latter will be assembling the more compact ones. All technical parameters remain to be revealed.
