Toyota Tj Cruiser production confirmed, premiere date announced

After the debut of the Toyota Tj Cruiser Concept at the Tokyo Motor Show two years ago, the Japanese carmaker has officially confirmed that the minivan-shaped SUV will reach the mass market. The international reveal will take place at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show in October.

For what it’s worth, the concept car was 4,300 mm (14.11 feet) long, 1,775 mm (5.82 ft.) wide and 1,620 mm (5.31 ft.) tall with 2,750 mm (9.02 ft.) between the axles. One of its main features was flexibility: you could fold down all seats except the driver’s seat.

The car will arrive based on the TNGA modular platform and will be available in five- and seven seat variants. It is expected to get FWD and AWD variants, although this remains unconfirmed. The drivetrain will most likely be a hybrid one, based on a 1.8-liter gas engine and rated at 122 horsepower (91 kilowatts). This is what the latest Corolla, C-HR and Prius ship with, at any rate. A two-liter gasoline engine should also be on offer alongside the PHEV.

Toyota pencils in market launch in 2020 for the United States and 2021 for Japan.
