A 1968 Toyota 2000GT in excellent condition with only around 19,000 km (11,800 miles) on the clock bought its seller $850,000 USD this week.
Only 351 cars in this spec came out in 1967 through 1970, and this specific coupe belonged to an even rarer left-hand-drive variant made for export. Reports say only 109 units was made.
Built for sale outside of Japan, the sports coupe had nonetheless spent most of its life in a museum in its home country. Only eight years ago did a collector from the United States buy it for their collection.
We are told that the car left the factory with a red exterior finish, but was subsequently re-finished in white. Its interior boasts a rather unusual combination of black vinyl and natural wood. There are boosted rotor brakes and individually suspended wheels all around.
A two-liter inline-six engine under the hood makes use of triple carburetors and pumps out 150 PS (148 hp / 110 kW) for a top speed of 220 km/h (136 mph). The engine underwent its latest maintenance in 2016-2017, but never received a complete overhaul.
As high as the price may seem, it falls short of all-time high. Just last year, a similar vehicle brought home $912,000. In 2013, another one made $1.2 million.
