Toyota surprises with an autonomous racecar concept

Akio Toyoda, the CEO of Toyota, has personally introduced the two-seat, track-ready e-Racer Concept at the ongoing 2019 Tokyo Motor Show.

Speaking during the reveal, he pointed out that, even though people stopped riding horses and started driving cars long ago, many were still fond of horse races. He expressed his conviction that it would be the same with the cars: self-driving systems will eventually eliminate the need to watch the road and hold the steering wheel, but there will always be people out there who would still like to take matters into their own hands.

The equipment and specs of the Toyota e-Racer are being kept secret so far, although the company says the car runs on pure electric power. It supports fully autonomous going, but you can always grab the wheel and drive if you want to. Aside from the driver, the cabin can accommodate a single passenger sitting directly behind. The seats can be quickly removed and the interior recolored or customized however you want.
