Toyota’s first all-electric sedan shows up on patent pics

The second entry in the Toyota bZ lineup is a D-class sedan named bZ3, as these images discovered by AutoHome.cn in the Chinese IT Ministry database suggest. The car runs on BYD batteries and has only one motor, but two power options.

The newcomer is smaller than the Camry at 4,725 x 1,835 x 1,475 mm L/W/H. At the same time, it has a longer wheelbase spanning 2,880 mm. The latest Toyota Camry is 4,885 mm long with 2,825 mm between the axles. Wheel sizes specified in the patent filing go up to 18 inches.

In terms of overall design, the new sedan looks similar to the bZ4X SUV – you may watch the video and compare for yourself. The bZ3 has smoother and sportier outlines with a sloped roof and an optional two-tone exterior finish. The images also reveal numerous video cameras and self-driving system sensors. The interior remains a mystery.

The only electric motor the car comes with drives the rear axle with no other options. You can choose between 184 PS (181 hp / 135 kW) and 245 PS (242 hp / 180 kW). The production will take place at the Toyota-FAW joint enterprise grounds, with batteries supplied by BYD China.

Back in December 2021, we learned the car had been scheduled for a conceptual debut this spring and production launch in late 2022. Since it has not even been introduced properly, it might end up getting postponed, especially considering the ongoing chip supply deficiencies. Prices are expected to lie comfortably below 200,000 Yuan (below $30,000).
