Shortly before the start of the anniversary 24 Hours of Le Mans race, Toyota Gazoo Racing rolled a prototype named GR H2 Racing onto the track. It is a preview of an endurance racecar that the company plans to release in time for the 2026 season.
The killer feature of the car is that it is a hybrid running partially on hydrogen power. No other technical specifications have been revealed so far. Automobile Club de l'Ouest, the hosting party of the Le Mans, decided to allow all kinds of hydrogen vehicles to compete in the race starting from 2026. The decision concerns both vehicles using fuel cells to extract electricity from hydrogen and ICE cars running on the principle of hydrogen gas combustion. Toyota has been researching both approaches, so it remains to be seen which one will find use in the prototype.
The only things we know about the Toyota GR H2 Racing so far is that the car is 5.1 meters (16.73 feet) long and 2.05 meters (6.73 feet) wide. It is thus considerably larger than the automaker’s prototype sports car from the LMP1 category.
