Since 2019, customers in the United States have not had the option to buy a Toyota Prius C, which the company replaced with the larger and better-selling Corolla Hybrid. But the Prius C is still alive in Japan, where it is called the Aqua.
The new generation revealed this week comes based on the TNGA-B platform of the latest Yaris. According to the manufacturer, it benefits from a more rigid body and improved noise proofing. The powertrain is also brand-new and consists of a petrol three-cylinder rated at 91 PS (90 hp / 67 kW) and 120 Nm (89 lb-ft) of torque and an electric motor adding another 80 PS (79 hp / 59 kW).
Higher trims offer optional AWD implemented through a second electric motor on the rear axle. However, this extra motor only kicks in when the wheels start skidding, or when the car starts moving.
Inside, there is a new infotainment system with a 10.5-inch display. Prices in Japan begin at ¥1,980,000 (approx. $18,000 USD).
