Yaris Cross may be Toyota’s smallest CUV on offer right now, but it may not last too long with the coming of a new one called Aygo X.
Rumors that the company had been planning to replace the Aygo hatchback with an SUV of sorts started circulating a few years ago. The Prologue Concept showcases what could become the production car’s design, but it is still an early prototype liable to change. The letter X references the X-shaped front fascia of the standard Aygo as much as it means ‘crossover’.
The exterior has been completely reworked, and the result actually looks more like a crossover SUV than a high-riding hatchback. There are LED headlights, a front grille with hexagonal anti-fog lamps, an impressive amount of ground clearance, and large wheels. It remains to be seen whether the action cameras built into the mirrors and the bike rack in the back will make it into production, though.
The cabin stays a mystery, as does the powertrain. It would make sense for the model to share the TNGA-B platform with the Yaris.
The EU spec may be produced in Czech Republic, which Toyota used to share with French companies making Aygo clones: the Citroen C1 and the Peugeot 108. The factory now belong completely to Toyota.
We expect the production car to debut sometime later this year.
