Video: Feel affection for this homegrown, BMW-engined Toyota Celica

Car enthusiast Daniel Railean used a Toyota Celica chassis and a plethora of other car components to build a restomod like nothing else in the world. He had spent years building it, starting off with as little as £750 to spare on his dream project.

Railean says he had always dreamt about driving a Celica, specifically, and waited for his brother to hand his own one down when it was ready. However, it never came to be: his brother’s car ceased to exist before he could claim it.

Some time later, Railean found a beaten-up Celica on sale online and bought it for a paltry £750, which was all he had at the moment. It turned out rusty and in bad shape overall, but he was prepared to deal with it. He swapped the stock engine for a 170-PS (168-hp / 125-kW) BMW E46 mill and borrowed the entire rear end from a 2011 3-Series. He also sourced a Renault Clio steering column and fashioned a body kit out of a ragtag assortment of aftermarket parts.

Reading this, you might think the car is a Frankenstein’s monster on wheels. It’s very far from truth, though: it is in peak driving condition, handles well and is street-legal. Its creator drives it every day and sometimes drifts, too. Perhaps most importantly, there is no other Celica like this on Earth.
