Toyota Celica may get revived next year

Toyota may arrive at the Tokyo Auto Salon next January with a concept car inspired by the iconic Celica, says BestCarWeb citing anonymous sources. It may ship with a 2.0-liter engine under the hood and four driven wheels.

The company had previously confirmed teaming up with Subaru and Mazda to develop a new generation of four-cylinder engines running on synthetic fuels. These are supposed to have between 1.5 and 2.0 liters of displacement and produce up to 400 PS (394 hp / 294 kW). BestCarWeb claims that the high-end 2.0-liter engine is the one Toyota plans on installing in the resurrected Celica lineup. The company also allegedly intends to use the same AWD system as in the latest GR Yaris and GR Corolla.

It is worth pointing out that the “affordable sports car” market niche that the Celica used to fill in the past is currently occupied by its ideological successor – the GR 86. Insiders believe that, in order for the new Celica to stand out from the crowd, Toyota may want to elevate it above all other coupes currently on sale with assorted premium options.
