Toyota unveils the Emperor’s new cabriolet

The Japanese automaker has posted pics of its newest Century convertible designed specifically for the Emperor’s family.

Naruhito will be crowned Emperor on October 22, 2019. Toyota has designed the festive vehicle specifically for the grand occasion, and says it has not done so in thirty years.

The ‘Century’ car series has been around for almost six decades now, but has only gone through three generations so far. The vintage-looking vehicles are being produced in small quantities for well-to-do Japanese people. The latest generation of the convertible, however, will be available exclusively to the Emperor’s family members.

The car will take the new Emperor on a parade drive before guests from 190 countries. Specially inclined seats will make sure everyone gets a good view of everyone inside.

Not much is being revealed about the tech aspect of the new series. Toyota says the convertible comes powered by a hybrid powertrain incorporating a five-liter V8 and multiple electric motors for 425 PS (310 kW) total output.

On an interesting side note, England-made Rolls-Royce Corniche III filled the role of the Emperor’s cabriolet during the previous coronation.
