Check out an elusive Hilux-based Toyota Classic wagon

A rare Toyota Classic estate car running on the Hilux platform went up on sale and managed to attract a top bid of $40,500, but failed to meet the reserve.

The automaker produced only 100 units back in the year 1996 as an homage to its very first light passenger car in history – the 1936 Toyota AA.

The limited series ran on a RWD pickup truck chassis and packed a 2.0-litr inline four-cylinder engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission and capable of 96 PS (95 hp / 71 kW). It had a two-tone exterior, spoked wheels sized 14 inches in diameter, white-wall tires, and a fake spare wheel cover in the back (the Hilux has a real spare wheel mounted under the bottom).

The cabin is largely typical mid-1990s Toyota fare, but individual touches like a Nardi retro steering wheel make it stand out. The trim uses plenty of leather and natural wood.

All 100 examples made were sold in Japan starting from an equivalent of $75,000 USD. This car was imported into the United States in February and had around 24,800 kilometers (15,410 miles) on the clock by the time it went on sale.
