Customers in Japan now also have access to the Toyota Corolla sedan/saloon and estate/wagon models that previously debuted on other markets, as well as the slightly facelifted Corolla Sport hatchback.
It is worth noting that the sedan/saloon version ships in region-specific trims: Sporty in Japan and the USA, Prestige in Europe and Russia/CIS, and both in China.
Both the sedan and the station wagon come powered by a 1.8-liter non-turbo engine rated at 140 hp (104 kW) and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque, linked to a CVT transmission and front wheel drive. You may also opt for a 1.2 turbo-four mill that produces 116 hp (86 kW) and 185 Nm (136 lb-ft) of torque. In the sedan and estate versions, the engine only links to manual transmission and FWD; in the hatchback version, CVT and AWD are available as paid options.
Regardless of the body style, you may benefit from purchasing a fuel-efficient Corolla Hybrid. Armed with a 1.8-liter naturally aspirated engine good for 98 hp (73 kW) and 142 Nm (105 lb-ft) of torque, it introduces an electric motor with 72 hp (54 kW) and 163 Nm (120 lb-ft) of its own. The resulting performance amounts to 122 hp (91 kW) after all transmission losses. FWD is offered by default, but you can opt for an ‘electric AWD’ system if you buy the sedan or the estate. In this case, a low-yield 7.2hp / 5.4kW, 55Nm / 41lb-ft motor is installed on the rear axle of the car.
According to the WLTP ratings, the Corolla Hybrid hatchback consumes 3.33 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers traveled (UK: 85 MPG, USA: 70 MPG). The JC08 rating is even more impressive: 2.92l / 100 km (UK: 97 MPG, USA: 80.5 MPG).
All Japan-sold Corollas (which now also includes the hatchback) ship with the preinstalled Toyota Safety Sense system. Aside from this, the facelifted hatch sports improved overall safety and steering.
