Toyota and Mazda agree to use the same tech platform for SUV production

The two Japanese car manufacturers own equal shares in the production facility waiting to open in Alabama, USA, and are planning to use it to produce crossover utility vehicles based on identical chassis and tech.

The factory had initially been conceived as a dedicated site for Toyota Corolla production, but those plans have since been revised and the investment amount considerably increased. According to the newest strategy, the production site will be able to churn out up to 300,000 annual vehicles.

Just what specific models Mazda and Toyota will be assembling there remains undisclosed. The first bits of information should follow in September, and the conveyor belts should start rolling in early 2021.
