Toyota Corolla Sport racecar runs on fuel cell power

Toyota has unveiled a racecar based on the Corolla Sport chassis and a hydrogen powertrain, which will participate in an endurance race next month.

Hydrogen vehicles usually rely on generating electricity from condensed gas to power their motors, but this Corolla is a whole different story. It uses a conventional 1.6-liter internal combustion engine redesigned to burn hydrogen as fuel. The exhaust is pure water steam, and the gas tanks withstand pressures up to 70 MPa (same as Toyota Mirai).

Toyota claims that developing this car brings it another step closer to attaining true carbon neutrality.

The Super Taikyu Series 2021 is a 24-hour endurance race scheduled for May 21–23, 2021.
