We seem to be approaching an all-electric era of transportation, but the good old internal combustion engine just doesn’t give up so easily. This JDM-Spec Corolla puts a new spin on the old three-cylinder, making it burn pure hydrogen instead of gas.
Combusting gaseous hydrogen makes the car almost completely carbon-neutral, although miniscule amounts of CO2 reach the atmosphere due to engine oil burning little by little during driving. What’s more interesting to us still is just how good the car sounds despite its tiny displacement.
The video shows what a 1.6-liter three-banger is capable of in terms of loudness and timbre when given a non-standard kind of fuel. Granted, it falls short of the majesty of some V6 and V8 units, but the reason we are drawing a comparison with them in the first place is testimony enough to its great soundtrack.
