Recalled: 570,000 Toyota and Lexus cars that may catch fire in China

Toyota has announced a major recall campaign in China. According to CarNewsChina quoting a local transport administration authority, it will encompass as many as 570,000 different vehicles imported from Japan or assembled locally. The issue lies in potentially leaky fuel system components.

The majority of the cars recalled are Corolla models – there are roughly 350,000 affected units. Your Corolla is potentially at risk if it was manufactured at the FAW-Toyota joint enterprise in 2019 through 2023.

Another 157,500 units are Highlander SUVs produced at the GAC-Toyota factory in 2018–2022. Around 68,500 Lexus RX units made over the same years are affected, too.

The report states that the fuel pump these vehicles are equipped with is prone to increased wear over time. When working under nominal load for prolonged periods, the pump housing may eventually crack and develop a leak. A single spark may then cause the car to combust. Even if the odds of such an outcome are minimal, the evaporating fuel is still an issue warranting a recall, the report points out.

All owners are invited to visit service centers for a pump check-up and replacement (when needed). Until then, the drivers are urged not to park their cars near open flame sources and to avoid driving them altogether if there is a fuel leak or an odd smell.
