China-spec Toyota Crown debuts in Japan

At the Super Taikyu racing marathon in Japan, Toyota unveiled the next generation of its Crown sedan with the steering wheel on the left-hand side. Combined with the Chinese hieroglyphs on the dashboard, this points to the fact that the company plans to sell the new Crown in China first and foremost. There has been no official comment yet.

Since both the exterior and the cabin appear finalized, it is safe to assume that the sixteenth generation is almost ready for production. It runs on the GA-L platform with a longitudinally mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. The car comes in at 5,030 mm (196.5 inches) long with 3 meters (117.2 inches) of wheelbase. The wheels are 19 inches large by default. All engine specs remain to be announced.

The interior offers a fair share of hardware buttons and levers – not exactly commonplace these days – but also comes with a large two-display unit on the dash. The transmission tunnel is so massive that we would imagine only two passengers being comfortable in the rear seat row.
