Drifting comes naturally for the Toyota GR86 and all of its predecessors, so seeing an official video dedicated to it is not even surprising. That is surprising is the sheer effort that went into making the adrenaline-pumping footage. Watch the ad itself and then follow up with a behind-the-scenes video explaining how it was shot.
As many of you can guess just by looking, it was drone footage that played the key role here. And the most impressive part here is, none of the scenes where drones seem to pass through cars are Hollywood magic. Rather than resort to flash cuts or, worse, CGI, the quadcopter pilot chose to literally fly through cars in mid-action, entering through one window and exiting through another. As the BTS vid explains, there were quite a few failed attempts and crashes – which was unsurprising, given the challenge of piloting a drone through a moving car.
In case you were wondering, the letters FR stand for “front engine, rear wheel drive”, the motto of all drift-friendly track tools such as the GR86, GT86 and AE86.
