Toyota is apparently already working on a new version of its GR86 coupe that will not be co-designed with Subaru like its predecessors, Drive reports referencing ‘insiders’. The car may receive the same electric motor that powers the latest GR Yaris and GR Corolla hybrids.
Both run on a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine available in versions rated up to 304 PS (300 hp / 224 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. We are told that the new GR86 will get a version of the same engine downsized to 1.4 liters and assisted by an electric motor installed between the engine and the transmission.
In addition to a new powertrain, the GR86 may wind up with a new chassis, because its current platform may not be able to accommodate the three-cylinder mill.
According to Drive, the sales will not begin until 2028. The informant says Subaru plays no part in the project and may never release a new BRZ based on the same powertrain. That said, the next-gen GR86 may go into production in one of Subaru factories in Japan.
The last rumor quoted by Drive concerns the Toyota Supra, which may also transition into a new generation in a few years. Allegedly, the Japanese automotive giant intends to sever its ties with BMW and produce the new Supra on its own, all-electric platform.
