Toyota GR 86 sprouts a special edition for the 40th birthday of the AE 86

A limited edition of the latest Toyota GR 86 will be released in Japan dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the classic AE 86. Buyers will be able to choose between manual (from ¥3.82 million) and automatic (from ¥3.92 million) for the transmission.

The engine stays the same. Subaru’s 2.4-liter naturally aspirated flat-four mill produces 235 PS (232 hp / 173 kW). Brembo brakes come to replace the stock ones, and Sachs shock absorbers are included in the base spec (but you can option any 2023MY GR 86 with them).

At the end of the day, décor is the only thing differentiating the limited edition from the standard car. Starting on the outside, it manifests in dark grey 18-inch wheels, black side mirror covers and door handles, a spoiler and small trim pieces throughout. The interior makes do with red accents, commemorative badges and plaques.

Only 200 such sports coupes are planned for production. The manufacturer expects there to be more potential buyers and says it will hold a lottery for the right to buy one.

The second generation of the Toyota GR 86 debuted in the spring of 2021.
