Automotive News reports citing own sources that Toyota plans to launch a couple of new three-row SUVs next year with nearly identical tech under the metal, but different badging.
Specifically, one of these is expected to debut under the Toyota badge and the other one under the Lexus badge. Both will be even larger than the current Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX.
The size comparison makes Motor1 believe that the company will be using the latest Highlander (shown in the gallery here) as the starting point. The car, which is 4,966 mm (194 inches) long, will probably be stretched further to accommodate the third row of seats.
As for the naming, Toyota is expected to name its newcomer ‘Grand Highlander’, while Lexus might go for ‘TX’. The company patented names TX 350 and TX 550h two years ago, when rumors claimed that both designations would be used for a large SUV succeeding the discontinued body-on-frame GX model.
While not official, the consensus is such that Toyota resolved to produce a full-size off-roader after receiving numerous requests from Lexus dealerships in the USA. Reportedly, many customers came looking for a vehicle larger than the stretched RX L.
Once the alleged Grand Highlander reaches the market in mid-2023, it will have to compete against the BMW X7 and the Mercedes-Benz GLS first and foremost. Its Lexus-badged cousin should follow half a year later.
