Will Toyota release a GR Hilux?

Toyota’s in-house tuner – Gazoo Racing – seems determined to bolster the performance of the majority of the current lineup, as evidenced by the recently revealed GR Yaris and the impending GR Corolla. Now, the company applied for ‘GR Hilux’ trademark in Australia.

Official representatives of Toyota are defensive on this point, stating that there are no current plans to launch a GR Hilux into production. Later on, however, everything is possible.

Gazoo Racing CEO Shigeki Tomoyama had said earlier that the company was technically ready to launch production of performance-laden Hilux trucks based on the Dakar Rally spec. To summarize, it remains unclear whether the GR Hilux will ever come out and when. The next generation of the pickup should be ready in two or three years.

The Toyota Hilux already has a ‘sported-up’ trim version called GR Sport, which you can see in our gallery and the video here. It is available in select countries and limits itself to minor suspension and stylistic improvements.
