Video: Fernando Alonso driving the 2021 Toyota Hilux

The facelifted Toyota Hilux pickup will soon launch on official terms, but in the meantime, you can watch this short video showcasing its off-road racing chops.

While the world is getting ready for the next Dakar Rally, Toyota invited Fernando Alonso to test-drive the updated truck. Twice Formula One champion in the past, Alonso is currently an active member of the Toyota Gazoo Racing team.

The specs aren’t there yet, but most industry observers expect the new Hilux to get a power boost (it currently sources 177 hp, or 132 kW or power from its 2.8-liter turbocharged diesel). New suspension geometry is also almost guaranteed; we will know the rest of the details during the launch event.

The first shots allegedly showing the restyled Hilux emerged two months ago – you can see them in our gallery here – but it remains open whether they aren’t fake. We’d expect the final production version of the truck to look like every other latest Toyota vehicle. As for the Toyota Safety Sense package, it will certainly expand with new and useful driver aids.

Last but not least, a Hilux GR may emerge later on packing a brand-new, high-end diesel engine.
